Hi all
I really need some help on this head cluster for a basket type ring i am making - the heart shape bezel and claws were done in the head studio in rhino gold and the baguette bezels were built with the rail method. I am unable to boolean them together as there are faults with the head studio heart shape (naked edges). I have tried to fix these by putting some beads in place but am unable to. I am now completely stuck and wishing I had hand made the piece! I would be really grateful for some help in fixing this as I have spent far to long solving the problems already.
Kind regards
Jan

If you have naked edges you might be in for quite a bit of trouble-shooting and rebuilding. Try checking things one at a time, you might need to explode a section and join it again, looking for trouble spots (edges that don't meet or are messy). Also, check (analyze) the direction of the things you want to boolean. I hope that helps!
Best of luck,

I looked a bit at the model (should have done that first). The problem is just at the point of the setting. I would try to rebuild the setting a bit larger (0.1mm - 0.2mm) and decrease the angle of the front/bottom prong. Another idea would be to make the heart setting a 4 prong setting (one on either side of the point), would both change the angle of the prongs and make setting easier. It just seemed that maybe the front prong/claw fell a bit outside the rest.
Making a new setting a bit larger, you might have to re-position your baguettes, but don't forget to allow for shrinkage, the setting seems fairly snug already.

Permalink Reply by Jan Phillips on January 27, 2012 at 9:51am Thanks so much for taking the time to look Jason - will try one more time with the front prong a different angle as this will be taken off and replaced with a v shape claw when the piece comes back from cast. Yes it does look a bit snug, but I usually plus 2 % the job afterwards to allow for shrinkage. I do find it frustrating that these automated tools seem to be full of bugs like this and was actually thinking of upgrading to matrix but was uncertain whether I would experience the same sorts of problems. Anyone on here who has both packages ?

Yeah, I have also had problems with some bugs (always in plug-ins, never in Rhino). The upgrade to Matrix is something I have thought about, but it is much more expensive.

Permalink Reply by pat schmidt on January 27, 2012 at 7:15pm yes your problem is in the tips of the pear setting they are open that happens in alot of the pointed settings!..you can always make the setting in head studio, then ungroup it,and rebuild the gallerys (hide the prongs first) ..one way to do that is get two isocurves on the surface of one gallery (close to the edges) then extend the curves ends so they intersect, then trim at the intersection, and extrude

Thanks for your suggested fixes,I have bitten the bullet today and ordered matrix as they assure me things like this do not happen with there software. we will see ! little glitches like this are slowing down my learning and there is no support and very little training for Rhinogold in the Uk apart from people like yourself who are kind enough to post solutions on the forum. Matrix on the other hand has masses of training and support but boy do you pay for it !
I hope it proves a good choice
