most chains are either hand made or made with a chain making machine or you could make one element and make a rubber mold and cast the pieces then assemble.... a good book on chain making can be helpful for learning how go make hand made chains

I have milled an element of a chain just like pat said.  Then you make a mold and pump them out.  Milling all the elements takes alot of time.  another thing I did the other day and I was very happy with the outcome was to get a bracelette with a similar design.  It does not have to be gold I used a silver one that would give me the weight I needed in gold.  You can even try and look for some costume jewelry.  Now adays they have everything.  Once you find the element you make a mold of that and pump out as many as you need and you have a sure fit with no twisting works excellent.
